Exceptionally Rare Letter Handwritten and Signed [Differently!] by the Ba'al HaSulam
Exceptionally rare letter entirely [over 30 words] handwritten and signed - in the different, rare signature of the leading in-depth Kabbalist of recent centuries, the sacred gaon Rabbi Yehudah Leib Ashlag, renowned by his moniker, "Ba'al HaSulam" for his monumental work on Sefer HaZohar. Jerusalem, 20 Kislev [early 1920s].
The letter was sent to "The gaon, the head of the Bada"tz of all the Ashkenazic communities here in Jerusalem [Bada"tz HaEdah HaChareidit]. In this letter, rare in itself and even rarer for its content, the Ba'al HaSulam calls the gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Havlin, representative of the Admo"r of Lubavitch in the Holy Land, to a din Torah.
"Two talmidei chachamim residing in one city ..." The claimant, the Ba'al HaSulam, and the defendant, the gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Havlin, were among the gedolei hador and both led yeshivahs in the Givat Shaul neighborhood, a suburb of Jerusalem. This was the issue about which the din Torah between the two gedolei hador revolved, in the sacred words of the Ba'al HaSulam "with respect to my [/his] yeshivah."
Many wonder at the unusual family name, "Ashlag." The Ba'al HaSulam was not from the Edot HaMizrach, rather from Poland. Indeed, in this early document, written upon the Ba'al HaSulam's ascent to the Land of Israel, his very rare signature (and stamp) appear - from before he Hebraicized his name, with the Polish ring to it - "Ashliak" along with his rare signature, "Ashlak" ending with the letter ק and not how he signs most of his (also rare) letters, "Ashlag" with a ג at the end.
Manuscripts by gedolei hadorot, especially their signatures, are known as a segulah for protection and success, and are considered amulets. Here are over thirty words handwritten and signed by the Ba'al HaSulam - the leading in-depth Kabbalist active in recent generations, and author of the renowned HaSulam sefarim.
Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of Kabbalist, the Admo"r Rabbi Yehudah Leib HaLevi Ashlag.
