Plantation Savings Tin Mechanical Bank
Very Scarce Red & White Building. Made by the Weeden Mfg. Company. New Bedford, Ma. - Pat.'d Aug. 7, 1888. From the Haradin Family Collection. The Weeden Company was primarily known as a maker of high end steam toys. But, at the end of the 1880's, they produced three windup driven mechanical toy banks. This threesome includes the Plantation Savings Bank, Ding Dong Bell and the Japanese Ball Tosser. They are all based on the same group of patents and all three of them have the same vertical rectangular shape. Coins pushed through the slot cause the seated man to strum his banjo and the articulated standing man to do a jig for you. This particular specimen of the Plantation Savings Bank is stupendous quality. It is likely the finest example in the world.
