San Gabriel Mission Bank
Very Rare Cast Iron Specimen. Unknown U. S. Manufacturer. Made Circa 1910 - 4 5/8" Tall. Illustrated as #42-B on Page 34. The San Gabriel Mission is considered architecturally unique among the California Missions. Construction commenced in 1779. Very remarkably, the building's designers seem to have been aware of California's abundant seismic activity. The walls of the San Gabriel Mission are more than four feet thick and sections of the support buttressing are up to seven feet thick. Even with these rigorous construction practices in place, the mission was damaged by earthquakes in 1804 and 1812. Clearly, the builders did many things correctly. Because the mission still stands defiant after nearly 250 years. There are only two known extant specimens of the San Gabriel Mission Bank in cast iron. This is a very rare chance to acquire one of the icons of the building bank field.
