MAXWELL TAYLOR
(1901 - 1987) Army officer and diplomat, served with distinction in World War II, most notably as commander of the 101st Airborne Division. After the war, he served as the fifth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, having been appointed by President John F. Kennedy. Fine lot of 12 signed typed letters, five signed as 'Max Taylor', seven as 'Max', various sized and places, 1959-78, all to Dr. Gilbert Darlington, an Episcopal clergyman who was the retired treasurer, publications director and investment officer of the American Bible Society. Content varies widely, including thanks for a first edition copy of 'Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung', his recounting 'tall tales about D-Day' at a luncheon, reading 'The Longest Day', donations of bibles to the crew of the NIMITZ, mentions of MacArthur and Jocko Clark, and also Vietnam: '...if we can hold fast on the domestic front, I am sure that our people in Vietnam will eventually carry the day...' Very good.
