The Jewish lexicon. Germany 1927-1930 - first edition - Complete set

Judisches Lexikon Ein enzyklopadisches Hand buch des judichen Wissens in vier Baden - "The Jewish Lexicon" edited by Dr. Georg Herlitz and Bruno Kirschner, published by Judischer verlag - Berlin 1927-1930 - complete set in original covers - first edition. German.

Of the most important publications of the 20th century dealing with Jewish art in its various branches, which is still considered the most comprehensive and in-depth lexicon in the German language ever published. Edited by Georg Herlitz and Bruno Kirchner, with the participation of Ismar Albogen, and more than 230 well-known Jewish intellectuals participated in its preparation, including Yosef Meisel, Aharon Sandler, Max Soloveitchik, Felix Teilhaber, Robert Welch, Michael Berkowitz, Natan Michael and Gelber Gelber. Five thick volumes accompanied by hundreds of photos plates and illustrations, mostly on Jewish art over the generations, Jewish photography, Jewish customs, and the great Jewish influencers, with an emphasis on Jewish art in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The set has come out over the years in countless editions. Before us the first and rare edition. In the first decades of the 20th century, another initiative was made to create an even more comprehensive lexicon in the German language, but work was stopped with the rise of the Nazis to power.

(Some believe that Nazi propaganda in Germany dealt with the antisemitic persecution of Charlie Chaplin based incorrectly on his entry in the lexicon before us, in which it is written about Chaplin: "One of the greatest actors of our generation. Born in 1889 to a Jewish family from Eastern Europe ..." In fact, Chaplin's biographers now believe that the actor had no Jewish roots).

Complete set - five volumes. Luxurious original covers with gilt embossing. Very good condition.
