OLIVER EDWARDS
(1835 - 1904) Union brigadier general whose troops held the bloody angle at Spotslvania, received the surrender of Petersburg, and captured Richard Ewell, Custis Lee, their staffs and an entire Rebel brigade at Sayler's Creek. Fine content A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Wausau, July 31, 1891 to Gen. Elliot Danforth. In part: '...the Sheridan memorial book came safe to hand. How well Sheridan's characteristics are portrayed by Swayne. Thank you very much for the book I value it highly. Sheridan was my guest at Winchester the night before the battle of Cedar Creek and commenced his famous ride from my Head Quarters...' Fine. Edwards refers to Thomas Buchanan Read's poem, 'Sheridan's Ride' which took some liberties with the facts - Sheridan only rode some twelve miles to reach his army, not twenty.
