JULIAN BRYANT, ABOLITIONIST NEPHEW OF WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT, NEGRO TROOPS ACTIVIST
JULIAN BRYANT (1836-1865) Union colonel of negro troops. Bryant was an intellectual, abolitionist and a nephew of the famous poet William Cullen Bryant. In the fall of 1861, in breaking up a Confederate recruiting operation, he armed 20 slaves, the first time union soldiers liberated and armed slaves. He led the 1st Mississippi Infantry (African Descent) in battle at Millikan's Bend, then the 46th USCT at Vicksburg, Memphis, and New Orleans. He drowned in Texas in 1865. Rare war-date D.S. as colonel of the 46th USCT, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Oct. 31, 1864. Bryant signs off on a six-day regimental Consolidated Provision Return for ten companies totaling 585 men, and 35 women. Folds, minor edge wear, else very good.
