R. Yisroel Isser Shapiro to the Brisker Rav! Fascinating Content! Yerusholayim 1931. Rare!
Fascinating autograph letter by R. Yisroel Isser Shapiro, son of R. Refoel Shapiro of Volozhin, to his cousin the Brisker Rav. He writes that the student Chaim Yaakov Levin, son of R. Aryeh Levin, is traveling from Yerusholayim to study under “the Rebbi of his father, the Gaon and Tzaddik Maran Baruch Ber Shlit”a in Kaminetz to bask in the glow of his holy Torah and piety”. He writes that Chaim Yaakov Levin is an excellent student, knowledgeable like many of the great Gedolim etc., he asks that the Brisker Rav write a recommendation letter to R. Baruch Ber on the student’s behalf.
He then writes regarding a Rosh Yeshiva in the city of Lomza by the name of R. Refoel Isser, who had left a manuscript on Maseches Yevamos in the hands of his daughter who resided in Brisk prior to WWI and that his daughter gave the manuscript over to R. Chaim of Brisk. He continues that one of the relatives of the aforementioned Rosh Yeshiva now wishes to publish the manuscript and he is inquiring whether the Brisker Rav either has it or knows its whereabouts.
R. Yisroel Isser Shapiro (1886-1971), was the youngest son of R. Refoel Shapiro of Volozhin and a grandson of the Netziv. In 1930, he emigrated to Eretz Yisroel and served as Rav of the Tiferes Bachurim shul in Yerusholayim. He then moved to Tel Aviv where he served as a Rav until his passing. Author of Ein Yisroel on Shas and other seforim.
