R. Eliezer Silver. Din Torah Regarding the Kosher Meat Industry!
Long interesting autograph letter by R. Eliezer Silver presumably to the offices of the Agudas HaRabbonim regarding an impeding Din Torah. R. Silver writes that he thinks the Beis Din should consist of R. Moshe Feinstein, R. Chaim Bik, R. Yonasan Steif or R. Yosef Eliyahu Henkin.
During the early years of the mass immigration of Jews to America the Kosher meat industry was in a dismal state. Although in the years following the Holocaust the situation had improved, there were was still much contention between the slaughter houses, butcher stores and the rabbinical supervision. This letter seemingly refers to such a case and R. Silver wanted to resolve the matter at a Din Torah even offering to travel from Cincinnati to New York to attend the proceedings.
R. Eliezer Silver (1882-1968), was born in Lithuania and studied under R. Chaim Ozer Grodzinski of Vilna, (who granted him Semicha), R. Meir Simcha of Dvinsk and R. Chaim Soloveitchik of Brisk. He immigrated to the United States in 1907, and around 1931 accepted an invitation to become Rav in Cincinnati, where he remained until his passing. Extremely active in the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the U.S. and Canada (Agudas HaRabbonim), of which he was elected president in 1929.
