Autographed Invitation by the Admor Rabbi Dovid Moshe of Chortkov, Son of the Admor Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin. 1889

Invitation to the Wedding of the Chortkover Rebbe’s Grandchildren

Autographed invitation to the wedding of the grandchildren of the first Chortkover Rebbe in the Holy Court of Chortkov

The chosson was the righteous Rav Aharon, son of Harav Dovid Moshe’s son Harav Yisrael of Chortkov, and the kallah was Sarah, daughter of his son Harav Nachum Mordechai.

I pray to Hashem that my joy shall be complete and blessed with heavenly blessings, and through it should come salvation to all my Jewish brothers, with life, health and success and all goodness destined for the House of Israel.
Praying on behalf of Klal Yisrael every day,
Dovid Moshe ben Moreinu Harav Yisrael

The Admor Harav Dovid Moshe Friedman of Chortkov (1828-1904) was the fifth son of the holy Ruzhiner, the Admor Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin. Upon receiving the announcement of his son’s birth on Rosh Hashanah of 5588, his father proclaimed that “a great Neshamah has descended to the world, ” and he later described him as “Kodesh kodashim, holy of holies.” Following the passing of his father, Rabbi Dovid Moshe presided over the Chortkov Chassidus for over fifty years, and the greatest Rabbanim in Galicia were among his chassidim.

Rabbi Dovid Moshe led his Chassidus with the majesty and glory modeled by his father, although he personally devoted countless hours to learning Torah in seclusion and abstained from the mundane pleasures of this world. He spoke minimally, with succinct, measured words. His brother, the Admor Rabbi Avraham Yaakov of Sadigura, remarked that “he is the holiest Jew I have ever seen.”

Harav Yisrael Berger, Av Beis Din of Bucharest and author of Eser Kedoshos, was personally acquainted with the Admor Harav Dovid Moshe of Chortkov.

He wrote: “One who merited basking in his holy presence could clearly see that his service and acceptance of the yoke of heaven were beyond the scope of human nature. He never rested or paused, neither by day nor by night, and he remained separate and isolated from his family, serving Hashem perpetually and devoting his days and nights which were like days to the light of the Torah and his prayers (Eser Oros p. 137).

Chortkov, 1889. (invitation is not dated, however it is known from other sources that the wedding took place on the 17th of the month of Av, 1889 (5649)) Page size: 20x14 cm. Handwritten by his gabbai and autographed by the Admor Harav Dovid Moshe of Chortkov. Reinforced at spine. Glue mark and stain in middle of page. Minor holes. Preserved in ornate new leather binding.
