An advertisement poster for the antisemitic Theater show 'The Jew from Malta'. Germany, 1930s

DER JUDE VON MALTA - Advertisement poster for the play "The Jew of Malta" by Christopher Marlowe. Germany, 1930s.

The Maltese Jew is an anti-Semitic play probably written in 1590 by British playwright Christopher Marlowe. The play was first performed in 1592, was a success and appeared in various theaters throughout England. It was written during a period of economic hardship in England that caused, among other things, Latina against communities of foreigners who lived in England (although Jews did not live in England at the time).

The work directly influenced Shakespeare as can be seen from his play 'The Merchant of Venice'.

The plot is about a wealthy Jew named Bravas, who lives on the island of Malta, and is avenging the loss of his property. The property was taken by the island governor to pay tax to the Turks arriving on the island. The Jewish Bravas - a dark figure of an unbridled murderer, poison wells and perform various acts of deceit in order to realize his goal. At first he helps a Muslim slave who has purchased. This slave is portrayed as a Christian hater and so is his master. The slave would be murdered by Bravas later because he had betrayed him. Bravas does not hesitate to use his daughter to avenge the governor of the island. It causes the governor's son to be killed during a duel over the favors of daughter Abigail. Later Bravas brutally murdered his daughter because she chose to convert to Christianity. He helps the Turks conquer the island and then turns his skin and helps the ousted governor. He was killed in a trap he himself had prepared for the Turks. The governor of the deposed island manages to capture and defeat the Turks.

From the play comes a cruel and unrelenting Jewish schemer who changes his identities according to his desires, and does not hesitate to achieve his dark goals. The play reappeared in various incarnations in the 19 th and early 20 th centuries, as well as in the 1930s in Nazi Germany, similar to 'The Jews of Siss', which adopted the Nazi propaganda machine in accordance with its anti-Semitic aims as it sought to equate the dark image of the Jewish race with the German people, .
