The pogrom at the Roubanovsky Pharmacy - Russia, 1905

Following the 1905 revolution, in which the Tzar was forced to grant civil and political rights to the people (the Tsar Manifesto), Russian reactionaries got revenge on Jews and conducted pogroms in many cities and towns, most often with government encouragement, in what was called the "Black Hundreds riots".The largest number of pogroms was recorded in Chernigov district of northern Ukraine. The pogroms there in October 1905 took the lives of 800 Jews, with property damage estimated at 70 million rubles. The Odessa pogrom was the most difficult, the Jewish newspaper "Voskhod" reported about over 800 Jews were killed and about a thousand injured, only in Odessa itself. Following the riots thousands of Jews left Russia, some immigrated to Eretz Israel where they counted on the settlers of Tel Aviv and some emigrated to the United States and South America.
