Shut Kol Aryeh with Glosses by the Author’s Grandson, the ‘Katzeh HaMateh’ – Unpublished!
Responsa Kol Aryeh, Part I, a collection of halachic responsa by the Gaon Rabbi Avraham Yehuda HaKohen Schwartz, first edition, Sámolyó 1904.
Throughout the sefer, remarkable handwritten glosses appear, authored by the
renowned Gaon Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Ehrenreich, Av Beis Din of Mad, grandson of the author and celebrated author of Katzeh HaMateh on the Mateh Ephraim, among other works. In his glosses, he deliberates on his holy grandfather’s rulings, writing:
"I did not merit to understand the words of my holy grandfather, the Gaon, of blessed memory..." (Leaf 4/1).
These glosses were never printed!
Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Ehrenreich, Av Beis Din of Mad (1875–1937), Author of Katzeh HaMateh. One of the greatest Hungarian rabbanim of his generation, he studied under leading luminaries, including
the Kedushas Yom Tov of Sighet, and Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Shapiro, the Darkei Teshuva of Munkatch. He was also a devoted disciple of his brother,
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich, Av Beis Din of Sámolyó.
Following the passing of
Rabbi Mordechai Leib Winkler, the Levushei Mordechai of Mad, he was appointed as his successor as Av Beis Din. His famous
Katzeh HaMateh on the
Mateh Ephraim became an essential work on the
laws of Elul and Tishrei, included in all modern editions of
Mateh Ephraim and regarded as a fundamental text. He also authored
Shaar HaChaim (on Torah scroll laws) and the responsa
Kav HaChaim.
Fair condition. Lacking title page and several index pages, wear and paper reinforcements, tears, stains. Some glosses are partially trimmed. New, exquisite leather binding.
