Pastel on Paper, Ludwig von Hofmann, Riverbank

Ludwig von Hofmann (1861-1945) was a German painter. He studied at academies in Dresden, Karlsruhe and Paris; he served as a professor at painting academies in Germany. Von Hofman and his paintings were persecuted by the Nazis, who saw the Art Nouveau style in which he painted as "degenerate art." Von Hofmann attempted to battle them, but in light of their rise to power, he ceased all his activity in 1937. His works were to be confiscated by the Russians after the Russian conquest of Germany in 1945, but his widow succeeded in rescuing many of them.

23x30 cm, initialed signature (L. H.) in the lower left corner. Placed in a wooden frame.

Very fine condition.
