Chevra Kadisha Ledger. Halas, Hungary. 1827
"Yartzheit Ledger of the Chevra Kadisha of Halas, 1827." Halas, [1827].
Specifications: [57] leaves, paper. Includes names of the deceased and their fathers' names, arranged by day of death, from Nissan through Adar. Primarily written in calligraphy.
Halas [Kiskunhalas] is a city in central Hungary, about 130 km south of Budapest. In the past, the Jews had been expelled from the city but then returned to settle there in the mid-18th century. The congregation was officially organized in 1826. They established a Women's Society, a school, and a room that was used as a synagogue and by the burial society. The community included a number of smaller congregations in the area.
This ledger was, therefore, written soon after the burial society was established.
Condition: Moderate. The spine is in disrepair and some of the leaves have separated. Light wear and tear to the bottom corner of the leaves, aging stains. Blemished binding.
