Exceptionally Rare Document: Distribution of Kollel Stipends in Vilna - One of the First Kollelim in the World


Unique and rare document, signed by nine rabbis who studied Torah at the famous kloiz of the Vilna Gaon, ztzuk"l. They received a stipend from community funds, and sign this document alongside the kehillah's stamp: "Chotam Beit Ulpana Ravta D'Rabbeinu HaGadol HaGr"a zllh"h B'Vilna." Vilna, 1890.


This early and rare document is signed, as stated, by nine scholars, who confirm receipt of 1800 silver rubles all together, each one receiving 200 rubles. The names of these rabbis are as follows: Yoel HaKohen Schmidt, Tzvi Hirsch Rosensky [a rabbi in Vilna - Ithica, New York- he authored Tzvi V'Chamid, Vilna, 1911], Tzvi Yehudah Polkowsa, Eliyahu Kahane, Michel Abramowitz, Tzemach Pomerantz, Ya'akov Bovitz, Chaim Avraham Davidson, Nota Flekser and others.
