Fundraiser appointment letter - Maghreb community. Jerusalem, 1874
Fundraising appointment letter from the Maghrebi community in Jerusalem given to R' Ben Tzion Preciado, signed by the communal institutions of the Maghrebi community in Jerusalem. Jerusalem, [1874].
Manuscript written by a scribe, addressed to Rabbi Avraham HaKohen, rabbi of Kashmatina [Constantine] Algeria. He describes the harsh conditions of the Maghrebi Jews in Jerusalem: "There is no moment without harm....hunger of famine burns our insides...the likes of which has not been experienced by our fathers or forefathers...the channels of abundance have been stopped...nobody cares or has pity...99 portions of poverty have been taken by the members of our kollels."
The letter is stamped with six different stamps of institutions of the Maghrebi community in Jersualem.
Rabbi Ben Zion Perciado HaKohen left to Egypt on a fundraising expedition in 1862, and then to Maghreb in 1874. This fundraising letter was addressed to the Constantine community.
