Historic Item, Most Sacred: Dedication by Rabbeinu the Chid"a in his First Book!

Sefer Sha'arei Yosef - novellae on Tractate Horiyot, and responsa. First book brought to print by Rabbeinu Chaim Yosef David Azoulay [the Chid"a]. This work was authored at the age of 17. It has many approbations that praise and glorify the young author. First edition. Livorno, 1756.

The title page features an extraordinarily rare [6-word] dedication handwritten by the tzaddik hadorot, the Chid"a, who was looked upon by all sectors of the Jewish people as most sacred, as follows: "Gifted by ... the youth, the author, to the wise philanthropist ... Eliezer Seforno ... who grows ever brighter until high noon" (this blessing is based on Mishlei 4:18).

The book also features the familiar signature and glosses of Chacham Massoud Tzermon, av beit din of Oran, Algeria, and author of Gur Aryeh, known by the abbreviation Metzitz. [The youth Massoud Tzermon Yeshmereihu Tzuro], and this is even the way he signed in the margins of the glosses here ("המצי"ץ" [הצעיר מסעוד צרמון ישמרהו צורו]). (For more about him, refer to Malchei Yeshurun, pp. 103-105). There are also glosses that were identified in characteristic Sephardic script of the period from another (unknown) writer - 'הב"ן' - in the margins of several glosses.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of Rabbeinu Chaim Yosef David Azoulay.
