Manifesto from the Persian Shah about Persian Jews given to Moshe Montefiore

Lithograph of a letter from the Persian Shah, who was hosted at Buckingham Palace in 1873, to the president of the London Committee of British Jewish Representatives. The letter was written by "Malcolm" by order of the Shah in Buckingham Palace on July 5th, 1873. With the addition of a request for a prayer on behalf of the Shah written by Moshe Montefiore in Hebrew.

The letter is written in Persian, English and Hebrew, and contains a positive reply to the request by the Jewish Committee to ensure the security of Persian Jews, just as the Shah protects the security of all his upright citizens. It also expresses appreciation for the blessings he received from the Jews. At the end of the page, Montefiore adds - in Hebrew - with his signature - a request that all Jews pray for the Shah's welfare.

The original letter is stored in Moshe Montefiore's archive: ARC. 4* 1746 06 128.

Moshe Montefiore was very active on behalf of the welfare of Persian Jews in the 19th century. In this context Montefiore met with the Shah Nasser a-Din when he arrived in London in 1873. A-Din was the first Persian ruler to travel to Europe and meet with the kings and leaders of the continent. The meeting between them was known to have a great influence on the Shah's attitude toward the Jews, and from that time, their situation improved, relatively speaking. After the meeting, Montefiore received a letter from the Shah expressing his desire to protect the Jews of Persia. Montefiore took this document, translated it into Persian and Hebrew, printed it in lithograph and sent it to the Persian communities. He added his own letter to this one, in which he asked Persian Jews to pray for the welfare of the Shah, and recommended that they hang the document at the entrance of the synagogues in their communities (for more on Montefiore's activities on behalf of the Jews of Persia, refer to: Amnon Netzer, "Montefiore V'Yehudei Paras - Parshiyot Muvcharot" in: Pa'amim, anthology 20, 1984, pp. 55-67).
