Shemittah Controversy: Extraordinarily Sharp Letter from the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant
Controversial letter, lengthy and important, from the rabbi of the Land of Israel, the gaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant, to the philanthropist R' Michael Erlanger of Paris. Jerusalem, 1889. Scribal script, without a signature.
The letter deals with libels and lies about the connection between Rabbi Shmuel Salant and Baron Rothschild; the response from Eliyahu Scheid - the Baron's lands administrator; HaChavatzelet publications and more. The controversy touches on fulfillment of the mitzvah of shemittah in the lands in Israel that were acquired by the renowned philanthropist - Baron Rothschild.
The letter has not been thoroughly examined, and it certainly contains important historic revelations. It is not known whether it has ever been published.
