Shu"t HaRi"m, Gur. First Edition. Handwritten Glosses by the Aruch LaNer's Son-In-Law

Book that stopped a plague!

Shu"t HaRi"m - responsa and compilations on Talmudic tractates by Rabbi Yitzchak Meir [the first Admo"r and founder of Gur Chassidism]. Józefów, 1867. First edition. Pedigree copy; signature and gloss.

First book printed by the author of Chiddushei HaRi"m of Gur, printed immediately after his passing, with a short introduction by his grandson and successor, the Admo"r, the author of Sefat Emet of Gur.

Featuring a signature on the front flyleaf by the gaon Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Bamberger, av beit din of Bad Kissingen, Germany, son of the "Würzburger Rav" and son-in-law of the 'Aruch LaNer.' A lengthy scholarly comment appears under the signature, regarding a halachic-grammatical topic that appears in the book. The comment opens with the words: "With respect to the comparative kaf [כ"ף הדמיון] mentioned in this book ..." In his comment, Rabbi Bamberger flourishes his pen with the famous distinguished Bamberger family genius and expertise, and he brings more than ten(!) sources from across the Talmud and adjudicative literature that discuss this rare topic. (Without Google or Otzar HaChochmah ...)

The book Meir Einei HaGolah (1904) relates that after the Chiddushei HaRi"m's passing, there was a plague in Warsaw. The Admo"r Rabbi Chanoch Henich of Alexander said that in his youth, there was a plague that ended in the merit of printing a book by one of the Rishonim, so this book by the Chiddushei HaRi"m must be printed immediately to bring an end the present plague. Indeed, when this book was printed, the plague ended.

Due to the Chiddushei HaRi"m's tremendous genius and major innovations, his books were eagerly received, even by those opposed to Chassidism, so that it is no wonder that an "Ashkenazic" rabbi is closely studying this Chassidic Rebbe's words, like Torah from Sinai!

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the author, Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Alter, and of Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Leib HaLevi  Bamberger.

Stefansky, Chassidut, no. 211. Stefansky, Sifrei Yessod 84.

[1] 157 leaves. 33 cm. The signature and the gloss are written on a piece of paper glued to the flyleaf.

Very fine condition. Aging stains. Original marbleized paper, imprinted and well-preserved.
