Chad Gadya. "Gedi Mekulas'. Altona, [1770]. With the Author's Handwriting
The famed Chad Gadya hymn from the Passover haggadah with the unique 'Gedi MeKulas" commentary authored by Rabbi Moshe Avraham Avrali. Altona, [1770].
The 'Chad Gadya' hymn is printed in large print letters in the center of the page, with the commentary around it.
[16]leaves. 18 cm. Anonymous printer. There were two printers in Altona at the time; Rabbi Yaakov Emden, who had a press in his home for printing his own works; and Moshe Bonn Segal. The second printer usually printed his name on the title pages of his books. However, Rabbi Yaakov Emden usually did not include his name on the books that he printed.
The "Gedi Mekulas" commentary explains the cryptic meaning of the Chad Gadya hymn based on the Christian and Muslim attempts to drag the Jewish Nation from their faith. Perhaps the printer was nervous about some of the sharp lines [?].
>>This is the author's personal copy, with marginal revisions in a number of locations. Noteworthy is his two-line comment on leaf [6], column 2, explaining that a 'good pearl' was lost because the printer was too nervous to publish it.
In the last two leaves, the author discusses the greatness of the Ibn Ezra and his commentary and explains some difficult passages. He also explains some difficulties in the Zohar, which seems to quote Tanaim who lived after Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.
Leather binding. Very fine condition.
Only edition. Very rare. Yaari Haggadot 164. Otzar Haggadot 254.
