Shir HaShirim. Warsaw, [1886]. First Edition. Hundreds of Supplements and Revisions in the Hand of the Netziv?
Song of Songs with the 'Meitiv Shir' commentary and the unique 'Sha'ar Yisrael' kuntress regarding anti-Semitism authored by Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin ztz"l, the "Netziv". Warsaw, [1886]. First edition.
The blank flyleaf bears the handwritten notation: שיר השירים מטיב עם כי"ק של הנצי"ב [Shir HaShirim Meitiv with the handwriting of the Netziv[.
The pages are filled with hundreds of revisions, comments and lengthy supplements, particularly to the kuntress regarding anti-Semitism. These amendments were definitely made by the author himself. In 1960, his grandson, Rabbi Shapira of Tel Aviv, printed a new edition of the book that incorporated about 95% of the supplements and revisions in this copy. He apparently used this copy to prepare his edition.
However, family members claim that this is not the author's script, but a copy that was made almost 100 years ago by a son or grandson of the author from his manuscript.
If this is true, why did the copier write at the beginning of the book 'Meitiv Shir with the handwriting of the Netziv?'
Original, rubbed leather binding. Thick, quality paper. Aging stains. Very fine condition.
