Letter written and signed by the Chemdas Shlomo, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Lipshitz, av"d Warsaw [1806]
Rare and important. This letter was written by the Chemdas Shlomo, the first rabbi of Warsaw and a Gadol HaDor in the times of the Nesivos and Rabbi Akiva Eiger.
This handwritten and signed letter was sent to Rabbi Yosef Landsberg of Posen, regarding purchasing a lulav for Sukkos and other issues.
He expresses his joy at finding a lulav (which was not easy back then) and writes, "
Thanks to Hashem, I procured a fresh lulav! From a garden four 'parsaot' from here." He later writes about the engagement of his son to the granddaughter of Rabbi Mordechai of Plotzk.
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Lipshitz (1765-1839) was born in Posen, where he learned Torah from Rabbi Yosef, av"d Posen, talmid of the Noda B'Yehudah. From 1804, he served as av"d Nasielsk and from 1821, he was the first rav of the great city of Warsaw. (Until then, the rabbanim in the city were morei tzedek or morei hora'ah.) He was a close colleague of Rabbi Akiva Eiger and often exchanged letters with Rabbi Yaakov of Lissa, the Nesivos. In his responses that were printed in the Chemdas Shlomo, the Nesivos addresses him with many flowery honorifics.
The addressee,
Rabbi Yosef Landsberg (1750-1825) was a prominent dayan in Posen and was very close to Rabbi Akiva Eiger.
