The editions from the Poalei-Zion Library series are rare and, based on research in library databases, there are probably only two books published in this series. The Poalei Zion movement sought a synthesis between socialism and Zionism. The text on offer propagates the establishment of Jewish settlements in Palestine with a socialist orientation. An understanding between the Jewish and Arab workers is sought, but also with the aim of raising the so-called Arab class members to a so-called higher cultural level.
Mendel Singer (Hebrew מנדל זינגר; born June 30, 1890 in Brody, Austria-Hungary; died September 10, 1976 in Haifa) was an Austrian-Israeli journalist.
Mendel Singer was active in the socialist Poalei Zion from the age of 17 and began writing for Jewish newspapers in Hebrew, Yiddish and German. He made a lasting impression on Joseph Roth, who was four years his junior, so much so that he gave the protagonist in his novel Job his name in 1930.[1] He drafted an appeal for the second Aliyah in 1908 and went to Palestine himself in 1909, Y. H. Brenner was on the same ship. He studied at the Ezra Teachers' Institute in Jerusalem, but fell ill with malaria and returned to Europe in 1911.
In Vienna, Singer became the organizer of Poalei Zion and, from 1927, editor of its newspaper The Jewish Worker. After the First World War he was one of the founders of the Yiddish book publishing house in Vienna. He published an anthology of writings by Yiddish writers who had died in the war. From 1924 he worked as a day job as secretary of the merchants' association and for the Phönix life insurance company. In 1928 he became a board member of the Israelite Community and was a critic of Robert Stricker there. In 1931, with Leo Goldhammer, he planned a German-language edition of Ber Borochov's writings.
When Austrofascism was established in 1934, he was imprisoned and released after five weeks on the condition of immediate emigration. At the end of the year he emigrated to Palestine with his family and became active in the Mapai. From 1935 until his retirement in 1955, he worked as editor of the newspaper Davar in Haifa, published by the Histadrut union. In 1948 he claimed in a detailed article that Adolf Eichmann was still alive. In Israel he published articles about the Jewish labor movement in academic journals. In 1963 he edited the collected writings of David Pinski with a foreword and in 1971 wrote a two-volume biography of Shlomo Kaplansky in Hebrew.
Singer became an honorary citizen of Haifa, and the city dedicated a street to him, against his will. Mendel Singer was married to Miriam Singer, and their son Uriel Simri (1925–2016) headed the sports science Wingate Institute in Netanya.
