Silver and Brass Purim Grogger. Dudik Sweid, Jerusalem 1981.
No. 1 of a limited edition of 24 items only made by the artist.
The rattler is shaped like the Hebrew letter Dalet (ד).
Horizontal cast brass with a silvery fleur-de-lis motif on both its sides and diamond-shaped designs. At the edge of the rattler, a silver and brass balcony and windows, with a brass figurine of Haman in its center hanging between two pillars. On one side of the rattler, above the balcony, appear the Hebrew words "Arur Haman" (Accursed is Haman) and on its other, the words "Baruch Mordechai" (Blessed is Mordechai). Attached to a rotating brass cylinder with a silvery tongue attached to a vertical handle, which when turned, makes a rattling sound.
No. 1 of a limited and signed edition of 24.
One of the popular Purim customs is to make a loud noise when Haman's name is said during the reading of the Megillah.
There is a historical documentation of children in France and Germany of the 9th century using rattlers on Purim. They would take flat stones or wooden paddles, write Haman's name on them and strike them together when Haman's name was mentioned during the reading of Megillat Ester. Another popular custom was to write Haman's name on the soles of their shoes and stomp their feet when his name was said, thus erasing his name.
The rattler is placed on a transparent Perspex base.
