Spice-Holder Made of 14K Gold, Silver and Crystals. Handmade by the Artist and Jewelry Designer Ruth Matar. New York 1976. Hallmarked.

The artist and designer Ruth Matar was born in Vienna and survived the Holocaust as an 8-year-old. She developed her talents in the USA before moving to Israel. Mrs. Matar had a studio and showroom in her house in the Yemin Moshe neighborhood of Jerusalem, which in her time was occupied by artists, craftsmen, writers and poets.

Not everyone new that she was also a Holocaust survivor, who at the age of eight, saw Nazi storm troopers breaking down the door to her home and beating her mother.

The base of this special spice-holder is made of a chunk of white crystals. Attached to the base is a silver tree trunk with petlas made of 14K gold on its top, surrounding a silver small cup for holding the spices with a floral motif on it also made of 14K gold.

Signed by the artist with silver and gold hallmarks from 1976.
