Rare Silver Kiddush Cup. Bartholomaus Heuglin. Augsburg, 1736.
Rare, dated Kiddush cup from the first half of the 18th century [1736], made by the silversmith Master Bartholomaus Heuglin, who operated in Augsburg, Germany.
Was born in 1701 and became a master in 1730. Operated for a decade only, having passed away in 1740. Was the son of the silversmith Johann Erhard I Heuglin.
The silver works he made are detailed in Die Kunst der Augsburger Goldschmiede 1529-1868, no. 2225, p. 355.
An octagonal silver cup with engraved decorations on its sides. The verses זכור את יום השבת לקדשו and שמור את יום השבת לקדשו are also engraved on the cup. In large, bold fonts, the artist engraved the words: 'שנת תצ"ו' [1736].
Overall good condition. Minor repair between the cup and the stem.
A similar cup, also made by this silversmith, was auctioned by Sotheby's in April 13, lot 128 of the Judaica Auction and sold for $17,000.
