Museum "Suitcase Binding" - Leather Covered Wooden Binding Integrated with Brass. Yemen, 19th Century

Impressive museum piece: The Torah Ohr book of Chamishah Chumshei Torah (Livorno, 1850), with a "suitcase binding" made of leather-covered wood, with buckle closures using removable "hooks."

The book is attached to a unique binding made like a suitcase that protects it during travels and while being carried around.

Two buckles that close using hooks attached with chains. Nails for protection and decoration on the corners.

Remnants of printed leaves on the inside of the binding that have been glued to the binding.

This edition of the siddur is in itself rare, and is not found in the National Library.

The variety of book covers, and for sifrei kodesh in particular, are a very interesting subject both for collectors and for researchers. There are bindings made of wood, parchment, velour, cardboard, remnants of leaves, remnants of garments and more. Beautiful or unique bindings especially draw attention.

This binding is not only beautiful and unique, but extremely rare. It can be assumed that there are only a few like it in the entire world.

First-rate museum piece.

Size: 23x30 cm. Thickness: 8.5 cm.

Moderate condition. The front binding is almost entirely detached. Worming perforations in the binding and the body of the book. Usage and wear marks. Cracks, peeling and scratches. The title page is detached. Lacking a decorative disc on the back, as well as several nails.
