Rabbi Haim Dov Kantor RIP Manuscripts Halacha and Slaughter

Spell-check letter. 3 More added sheets about Halacha slaughter procedures in his handwriting.

Rabi Haim Dov Kantor was born in Karlin, served as a cantor (hence his name "Kantor"). Lost his father at 7. Immigrated to the Land of Israel in the 1870s with his widowed mother and 3 sisters. Settled in Jerusalem. Studied at important yeshivas.

Married to Haya Esther, daughter of Ya'akov David Spector. After his marriage lived in Ekron. In 1987 was one of the founders of the settlement Shfiya and moved to live in it.

As member of the old Jewish population in Jerusalem, his figure and appearance were out of the ordinary among the area's inhabitants. For dozens of years served as the local Shochet (Butcher), a Mohel (circumciser) in all the region's settlements. For a living he served as the head Kosher inspector of the Zikhron Ya'akov vineyard. Corresponded with Harav Kook on Halacha and Kosher subjects.

Assisted Israel Belkind in his activity in the educational institution "Kiryat Sefer" which he founded and directed in Shfiya as well as giving treatment to the orphans of the Kishinev pogroms taken for care by this institution. In WW1 he acted for bringing in Jaffa deportees to the settlements of the area. Traveled a number of times to Europe for a propaganda campaign for the rise to the Land of Israel.

In his last years he moved to an elderly home in Jerusalem, where he passed away in 1944. Buried at the Olives Mount Cemetary.

Rabbi Haim Kantor appears as a character in Shay Agnon's story "The Rolling Up" (Haglila) (appears on the volume "Opening Words"), describing Agnon's visit to Zikhron Ya'akov in 1911.
