The Kollel Österreich Controversy: Group of [Approximately 30] Historic Documents, Certificates and Letters from Admo"rs and Rabbis. 19th Century

Rare find: collection of letters connected to the controversy at Kollel Österreich in the Galilee. Some of them constitute important historic discoveries, unknown until now.

With the passing of the 'Torat Chaim' in 1854, a dispute broke out about the inheritance of the Eretz-Yisrael administration between his children, Rabbi Ya'akov Shimshon, who inherited his position in Kossov; Rabbi Yosef Alter, who ascended to the Land of Israel; and Rabbi Menachem Mendel, the author of Tzemach Tzaddik, who resided in Vizhnitz. The area of their leadership was under the administration of Kollel Österreich. Under the leadership of the sons, two "kollels" opened, Kossov and Vizhnitz. In 1886 the two sides reached an agreement for the unification of the two kollels. Irregularities prevailed at the Vizhnitz kollel in 1890, and the complaint reached the author of Imrei Baruch, who indeed expressed his opinion and warning about the matter. In the background was also the friction with the Chassidim of Sighet, which was also in the Maramureş region. This dispute caused a lot of damage to the donations to the Eretz Yisrael funds. This dispute caused a civil war in the Orthodox Jewish communities in the country.

The whole range of these issues about the events of the period, considered the spiritual-Chassidic golden era in the Galilee, is assembled in the collection before us. It includes letters from tzaddikim; special certificates; receipts, lists, intra-Galilee and updates from one place to the next; lists of donors to the various kollels; receipts from the recipients - a treasure trove for collectors, scholars of Safed and Tiberias in particular and scholars of the period in general.
