Letter from the Rabbinical Leaders of the Sephardic Community of Jerusalem; 1885

Letter of condolences upon the passing of the great Sir Moses Montefiore, signed by the leaders of the Sephardic community in Jerusalem.
The letter is written in beautiful scribal handwriting by Rabbi Levi Yiflach and includes original signatures and seals.

Rabbi Refael Elazar HaLevi Bentubo (1825 - 1886) was a leading Moroccan Rabbi living in Jerusalem. He immigrated to Eretz Yisrael in 1858 where he was appointed Rosh Yeshiva of the Sephardic community and later became Rabbi as well. He authored Pekudas Elazar.

Rabbi Yissachar Atzraf (1817 - 1892) was the Rosh Av Beis Din of Sal, Morocco and the Rabbi and father-in-law of Rabbi Refael Ankawa (“the angel”).
A renowned miracle worker and holy Torah scholar, he was looked upon with great admiration from leaders of all communities. Rabbi Yissaschar later immigrated to Eretz Yisrael and succeeded the Pekudas Elazar as Rabbi of the Sephardic community in Jerusalem.

Rabbi Levi Yiflach was one of the respected chachamim of the Sephardic community. He served as the personal scribe of Rabbi Yedidya Refael Abulafia and wrote his Kabbalistic siddur.

Rishon LeTzion Rabbi Nachman Batito (1846 - 1915) was a leading rabbi of the Sephardic community. At the young age of twenty he was appointed by Rabbi David ben Shimon to serve as a judge in his Beis Din and in 1909 Rabbi Nachman was appointed Rishon LeTzion.
