R. Yosef Yoizel Horowitz. Alter of Novardok. Complete “Shmuess” in his handwriting. Extremely Rare.
Historic discovery. Seemingly Unpublished!
Complete “Shmuess” (unsigned), on the topic of man’s ability to overcome “The Evil Inclination”, by R. Yosef Yoizel Horowitz, the Alter of Novardok.
R. Yosef Yoizel Horowitz (1847–1919), known as the Alter of Novardok, was a close talmid of R. Yisroel Salanter and the founder of the Novardok network of Yeshivos and its unique “Derech Ha’Mussar”. These Yeshivos were located throughout Poland and Russia, including the towns of Novardok, Bialystok, Berditchev, Shavel, Dvinsk, Warsaw and Minsk. The Alter would personally travel to all of the Yeshivos throughout Russia to supervise and lead these Yeshivos. The influence of the Novardok Yeshivos was enormous, spanning a network of seventy Yeshivos, with thousands of Talmidim. Distinguished alumni include, R. Yechezkel Abramsky, R. Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman (Ponevezher Rov), R. Yaakov Yisroel Kanievsky (Steipler Gaon), R. Gershon Liebman and countless others.
In 1919, a typhoid epidemic broke out and the Alter’s home was soon filled with the sick to whom he personally attended. Not long after, he contracted the disease himself and was niftar.
21 by 17.5 cm. Handwritten on both sides of the page (3 lines on the second side). Upper right corner cut, effecting text.
