Long typed letter by the board of the communities “Moshav Zekeinim” (old age home) of Vilna to R. Yosef Gurwitz of Melbourne, Australia. With a detailed description of the importance of the old age home and requesting financial assistance.
At the end of the letter are 2 lines written and signed by R. Chaim Ozer attesting to and reiterating what was written in the letter.
R. Chaim Ozer Grodzinski (1863-1940), was born into a distinguished rabbinical family and was renowned from a young age for his brilliant mind coupled with great diligence. He originally studied in Eishishok and later in Volozhin under R. Chaim Soloveitchik. He married the daughter of R. Eliyahu Eliezer Grodensky, the leading Rav of Vilna (son-in-law of R. Yisroel Salanter), whom he later succeeded. He dedicated his life to the needs of the Jewish People was recognized as the leading Posek and spiritual guide of his generation, answering halachic queries from all parts of the world and being consulted on every Jewish communal issue. He played an instrumental role in preserving Lithuanian yeshivas during the Communist era, and led the yeshivas of Poland and Russia during the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, when he arranged for these yeshivas to relocate to Lithuanian cities.
