Emotional Letter from Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef to his Son, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef

" ... And you have succeeded to ride the way of truth and humility, justice ..."

Letter from the Rishon LeTziyon, Maran Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef, to his son and successor, the Rishon LeTziyon Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef. The letter shows how the great father prepares his young son for the high position designated for him. Emotional historic letter.

The letter was written in Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef's beautiful, fluent script, while he was chief rabbi of Tel Aviv. It is addressed to his son, Rabbi Yitzchak, while he was studying in the Chevron yeshivah in Jerusalem. The letter is paved with love, and opens with the words: "To my dear son Yitzchak ... I hereby confirm the receipt of the package you sent me with your friend from yeshivah." The "package" is Torah novellae which the young Yitzchak toiled over and sent to his father, and Rabbi Ovadiah responds to him: "I will attempt to review the material ... and send a message after I have checked it ... and [you] will correct it." Rabbi Ovadiah, with full knowledge of the high positions awaiting the youth, in accordance with his talents, implores him, "I would very much like you to put all your interest in studying the holy Torah ... your father who loves you very much, Ovadiah."

Rabbi Ovadiah, despite his great dedication to his son, who is in a different city (those days, the trip from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv was no trivial matter), does not take interest in his son's material well-being, whether he is eating or sleeping as needed, or how he is acclimatizing to a competitive yeshivah, as was the Chevron yeshivah, a Sephardic youth - almost the only one - among hundreds of Ashkenazim. He does not share home events with his son, how his mother and siblings are doing. There is only one request he has of him: "I would very much like you to put all your interest in studying the holy Torah." Rabbi Ovadiah does not include pocket money nor home-made cake, he includes ... a pair of tefillin. "Enclosed, please find your tefillin." This is how a rabbinic leader is raised!
