Chaim V'Shalom by the Author of Minchat Elazar of Munkacs, with a Foreword by his Son and Successor - the Only Deposed Admo"r in History

Chaim V'Shalom - kabbalistic elucidations of the Torah by the Admo"r Rabbi Chaim Elazar Shapira of Munkacs. Sighet Maramureş, 1938. First edition.

At the beginning of each section, there is a foreword by the author's son-in-law, Rabbi Baruch Yehoshua Yerachmiel Rabinowitz, Av Beit Din of Munkacs - the Admo"r who was deposed after changing his colors (see below).

The gaon Rabbi Chaim Elazar Shapira [1872-1937] was an Admo"r, a kabbalist, one of the geonim of Torah, halachah and Chassidut of his generation. He led the battle against Zionism and was the spiritual patriarch of Satmar Chassidim. He visited the Land of Israel to consult with his friend, the "Saba Kaddisha" Rabbi Sh. E. Alfandri and to resolve his kabbalistic questions with him. At the same time, he took the opportunity to establish the Batei Munkacs neighborhood. The author of Divrei Chaim of Munkacs said of him: "A person like him descends to the world only once every few generations."

His son-in-law, Rabbi Baruch Yehoshua Yerachmiel Rabinowitz [1915-1998] heir and successor to his father-in-law, the author of Minchat Elazar. He served as Admo"r of Munkacs from 1937 until his removal in 1945. He was appointed several years before the outbreak of the Holocaust as rabbi of thousands of Chassidim who later referred to him as "the rebbe, may his name be obliterated" ['הרבי ימח שמו']. This was because after the establishment of the State of Israel, he changed drastically and adopted the approach of support and recognition of the state, and would even celebrate Yom HaAtzmaut with Hallel and joy, in contrast to his father-in-law's stance. As a result, he was deposed from his position as Admo"r of Munkacs Chassidim. After his removal, he served as rabbi of São Paulo, Brazil, and then starting in 1963, he served as rabbi of Holon. Rabbi Rabinowitz also served as a mohel, and Rabbi Yisrael Hager, the Admo"r of Vizhnitz, was among those he circumcised.
