On July 5, 1961, Israel successfully launched a missile for atmospheric research, designed and launched by a team of Israeli scientists and technicians, who noted that Israel's ability to prepare the submunitions produced entirely from materials found in Israel.
The material was developed by the Ministry of Defense Research Department. According to an official statement, the missile weighed about a quarter of a ton and was launched to a height of about 80 kilometers, and it was called Shavit 2.
