Uri Zohar was born in Tel-Aviv in 1935. Zohar was an entertainer, an actor and a prominent film director until he decided to become religious in the late 1970s. Zohar started his career in the Nahal Military Band in the 1950s and shortly afterwards he stood out as a first-class actor and entertainer. In the 1960s Zohar and his friend Arik Einstein gathered some artists and Bohemian figures, and formed a group named "Havurat Lul". This group created numerous skits considered until today as the peak of Israeli satire and entertainment. In the early 1970s Zohar directed the films "Metzizim" and "Eynaim Gedolot" considered as milestones in Israeli cinema. In these films Zohar examined his own way of life and criticized harshly the hedonistic society of Tel-Aviv. A year prior to starting the process of becoming religious, Zohar won the Israel Prize, but refused to accept it.
Early in 1977 Zohar retired from the world of show business. He joined the "Or Sameach" Yeshiva and later studied in Yeshivat "Aderet Eliyahu" with Rabbi Yitzchak Shlomo Zilberman, and was ordained as rabbi several years later. Zohar is one of the leaders of "Lev LaAchim" organization which spreads the values of Judaism.
