Autograph letter by R. Shmaryahu Yosef Karelitz Rabbi of Kosava. Kosava (Lithuania), Adar 1913.
Sent to Kvėdarna (Konstantynowo, town in Northwest Lithuania), to his son R. Avraham Yeshaya, author of the Chazon Ish who at that time resided in Kvėdarna, near his father-in-law. He informs his son of a letter received from his daughter who was considering moving to Białystok because her husband, R. Shmuel [R. Shmuel Eliyahu Kahn, later Rabbi of Orsha] received a position there. He writes: "She did not write the matter to which he was summoned, she just writes that the matter is appropriate to my wishes and my spirit… G-d should bless them with success and plenty". The letter ends with his usual signature: "Shmaryosef" [One letter Yud representing the mutual letter Yud of both his names, Shmaryahu and Yosef].
R. Shmaryahu Yosef Karelitz (1852-1916), author of Beit Talmud, served as Rabbi and head of the Kosava Yeshiva near Grodno. Son-in-law of R. Shaul Katzenelbogen Av Beit Din of Kobryn. All his nine sons and sons-in-law were prominent G-d fearing Torah scholars and important rabbis. Among them are Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz, author of Chazon Ish, R. Meir Karelitz Av Beit Din of Lachowicze and one of the heads of Mo'etzet Gedolei HaTorah and R. Ya'akov Yisrael Kanievsky author of Kehilot Ya'akov (the Steipler).
