Ben Yisrael was Portuguese kabbalist, writer, diplomat, printer and publisher. He was the founder of the first Hebrew printing press ("Emeth Me Erets Titsmach") in Amsterdam, 1626 and chief proponent of re-admission of Jews to England. Baruch Spinoza was a pupil. This book was his seminal work, a treatise on Jewish concept of reincarnation of souls, published by son Samuel six years before both died.
