Letter from Rebbe Eliezer of Radvil-Ustila - Ustila, 1886
Letter from Rebbe Eliezer Yungerleib of Radvil-Ustila. Ustila (Ustyluh), [Cheshvan, 1886]. Written by a scribe, with five lines handwritten and signed by the Rebbe. In the letter, dated "Wednesday, Parashat Lech Lecha, [1886]", addressed to "my dear relative, close friend, exceptional in Torah and fear of G-d… R. Eliezer", the Rebbe relates that he did not send the item as promised, since he had decided to travel that week to Chortkov and Husiatyn through his friend's town, to his son Yisrael David, as he wished to visit his grandfather's gravesite. The letter concludes with five lines handwritten by the Rebbe, with his signature: "So are the words of his relative, who seeks his wellbeing forever, Eliezer son of the rabbi… I reiterate my request… not to delay, and to send the new passports in the first mail, so that I will be able to travel… before Chanukah…". The recipient's name is inscribed on the back page. Rebbe Eliezer Yungerleib of Radvil-Ustila (1843-1893, Encyclopedia of Chassidut, I, p. 249), descendant of the Maggid R. Yechiel Michel of Zlotchov. He was rabbinically ordained by R. Shlomo Kluger. In 1873, he was appointed rabbi of Radvil (Radyvyliv), and in 1879, of Ustila, in place of his grandfather, R. Pinchas of Ustila. Rebbe Avraham of Trisk, leading rebbe in his generation told his Chassidim that R. Eliezer "effects salvations like myself". This letter discloses that he would frequent the courts of Rebbes scions of the Ruzhin, Chortkov and Husiatyn dynasties (as did his father Rebbe Yosef). [1] leaf. 17 cm. Fair condition. Stains. Tears slightly affecting text, repaired with acidic adhesive tape. Folding marks.
