Letter from Rabbi Aryeh Leibush Horowitz, Author of Harei Besamim - Stryi, 1896
Letter handwritten and signed by R. Aryeh Leibush Horowitz. Stryi, Rosh Chodesh Nissan 1896. Numerous blessings and Passover wishes. Addressed to his disciple R. Alter Shaul Pepper. At the foot of the leaf, following the conclusion of the letter, an additional letter addressed to the father-in-law of R. A.Sh. Pepper, the wealthy R. Meir Leib Yaeger of Bitshkov (Velykyi Bychkiv). In the letter, R. Aryeh Leibush expresses his joy upon receiving his disciple's letter, in which the latter had informed him that he is currently comfortably settled, and able to study Torah in peace and tranquility. He then extends his blessings and Passover wishes, and blesses him that this state of serenity should continue forever. The letter is signed: "Aryeh Leibush HaLevi Ish Horowitz, rabbi here and of the vicinity". R. Aryeh Leibush then sends regards to the father-in-law - R. Meir Leib Yaeger, and blesses him in view of his appreciation of his son-in-law and the generous support he extends him, thereby facilitating his Torah study. R. Aryeh Leibush Horowitz (1846-1909), author of Responsa Harei Besamim, five volumes, was a leading Galician Torah scholar and halachic authority. A beloved grandson of R. Meshulam Yissachar Horowitz Rabbi of Stanislav (Ivano-Frankivsk) author of Bar Livai, and son of R. Yitzchak Horowitz author of Toldot Yitzchak and Me'ah She'arim. He served in the Zalozitz (Zaliztsi), Stryi and Stanislav rabbinates. In his youth, he would frequent the court of the Divrei Chaim, Rebbe of Sanz. The first two parts of Responsa Harei Besamim were printed in his lifetime. He arranged the rest of his writings for print but they were never published. During WWII, his writings disappeared in the fire which consumed Bistrița, but his disciples dug under the ruins of his house and unearthed the manuscripts, which were then valiantly smuggled into Eretz Israel and the US, where the other three parts were published. [1] leaf. 22 cm. 15 autograph lines. Fair condition.Tears (repaired) to the folds.
