Photograph Album – Convention of a Jewish Youth Movement in Zakopane, 1935 – Wooden Binding with a Carved Portrait of Herzl
Album with about 55 photographs from the convention of a Jewish youth movement in the city of Zakopane (Poland). Zakopane, 1935.
The photographs are mounted on the album leaves (some are numbered in the plate), and probably document members of Beitar movement at a summer camp in the Polish resort town Zakopane. Among others, the photographs portray tent camps, field kitchens, marches, circles of dancers, drummers and musicians, "shooting-training" with sticks, meetings of the movement graduates, and more.
The album is bound in a fine wooden binding with a carved portrait of Theodor Herzl, with a Star of David and a decorated frame. Carved on the back binding: "Zakopane 1935, B.L."
Enclosed: a photograph portraying Dr. Yosef Pa'amoni, one of Beitar founders, with four acquaintances. An inscription in handwriting on the back of the photograph: "Directors of T.A. branch, B. Gurevitz, M. Targin, Dr. A. Dodan, D. Hinvan, Y. Pa'amoni" (the photograph may have been detached from the album).
Photographs: approx. 8.5X6 cm (some larger ones). Good-fair condition. Stains and defects (mostly slight). A number of photographs are partly detached. Album: approx. 21X13 cm. Fair-good condition. Tears and defects to leaves. The margins of the wooden binding are rubbed. Tears to cloth spine.
