GREGORY XVI: (1765-1846) Pope of the Catholic Church and Ruler of the Papal States 1831-46. Strongly traditionalist he opposed modernising reforms. Gregory XVI is the most recent non-bishop to become Pope. A good A.L.S., D. Mauro Cappellari, one page, 4to, Rome, 11th December 1825, in Italian. Gregory XVI writes this letter in his capacity as Cardinal, created by Pope Leo XII few months earlier, and refers to the Pope«s decision and his own in part disagreement with, stating in part `After so long and finally the Pope«s decision has been issued = pro nunc non expedire. A decision which do not please me at all, and which I was not expecting. I understand the circumstances you are living and how bitter this situation must be for you. As far as I understand, the reason being the young priest«s ignorance..« further explaining the options available from now on and saying `..the doubt, because the ignorance of the young man has nothing to do with the matter we are talking about..« Small tear to the right edge to the fold, with slightly damaged edges.
