IGOROT SHIELD, KALINGA TRIBE (IGOROT), LUZON ISLAND
Wooden shield carried for protection during warfare. Mound shaped and forked with three prongs at the top and two prongs at the base. Rattan basketry was woven near the prongs to reinforce the wood. The shield surface has been curved and blackened the distinct design of the Kalinga warriors with curved handle at the back. Ca. 1900. Provenance: Collection of Edward Frey, the author of The Kris: Mystic Weapon of the Malay World (Images of Asia).
