Unrecorded pamphlet in Hungarian published in 1944 (in the midst of the Holocaust) with over twenty pages of the rules and regulations of the Satmar community Chevra Kadisha. On the final page there appears a list of the members, with the Satmar Rav R. Joel Teitelbaum as the head of the Chevra. In March 1944, the Nazis invaded Hungary and by June 1944 the Jews of Satmar had almost all been deported to Auschwitz.
Providing a glimpse of the inner workings of a prominent European Chevra Kadisha under the leadership of the Satmar Rav on the eve of destruction.
In the early 18th century, Jews were allowed to settle in Satmar with the first Jewish community formally established in 1849. The community grew in numbers and prominence and in 1944 some 20,000 Jews resided there most of whom were murdered by the Nazis. The community was led by R. Joel Teitelbaum who miraculously survived the Holocaust, later settling in America where he reestablished his kehilla.
