A printed page from the Jewish periodical "Shlemiel". the 1st issue following Herzl's death, by Dr. Max Jungerman, Berlin 1904. Rare.

Monday, August 1st., less than a month after Herzl's death.

The title: Theodore Herzl, a three-part song of lamentation in the memory of Theodore Herzl.

1st verse:

Anyone who remembers him, has to cry, oh have to cry,

Will there ever be comfort for my nation?

You looked so proudly at that one and from now on you will not see him again.

2nd verse:

Many thousands of hearts are filled with deep anxiety.

Many thousands of hearts are so heavy with worry.

The jolly clown also has teary eyes,

Can not rejoice anymore and laugh no more.

3rd. verse:

Together with the orphaned People, I want to lament.

In tears I want to look up.

Death took my best friend.

The humor fell into my pit.
