On the title page there appears in English the signature of Sir Moses Montefiore. Presumably the publishers presented the sefer to him as a gift on one of his visits to the Holy land.
Sir Moses Montefiore, (1784 – 1885) was a Jewish English financier and banker, advocate of social reform, philanthropist who served as Sheriff of London. He devoted most of his life to assisting Jewish communities worldwide, particularly the Jews of the Holy Land to whom he donated large sums of money to promote health, education and industry. Amongst his many noble endeavors was the financing of a printing press in Yerushalayim as means of providing a livelihood for the impoverished residents of the old Yishuv.
