[London: Newman & Co., Bishopsgate, 1849]. First Edition. Original calf binding with title on spine and edging in gilt. Octavo. 13 hand-colored, lithographed plates humorously depicting army life. Published anonymously, this humorous work (written by Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hort and ably illustrated by Alfred Ashley), pokes fun at the adoption of the red shell jacket in the British Army for officer’s undress on home service in lieu of the blue frock-coat worn previously.
