In the period from September 1, 1943 to October 1, 1943, the SS Panzer Grenadier Training and Replacement Battalion 5 moved to Ellwangen. Since the barracks were insufficient for the new troops, parts of the training companies were also housed in the villages around Ellwangen. On April 23, 1945, the German Waffen-SS troops withdrew and American troops occupied the Muhlberg barracks.

The town of Ellwangen an der Jagst is located about 17 km northeast of Aalen in Baden-Wurttemberg on the border with Bavaria.Origin and development of the SS garrison in Ellwangen (Muhlberg barracks)The Muhlberg barracks in Ellwangen was built during the First World War as a Württemberg NCO school and was completed shortly before the end of the war in 1918. In the following years it served as the Wurttemberg Police School and part of the building as an orphanage.In 1933 the barracks were cleared and the "Political Readiness Wurttemberg" was given at the time.
In 1935 and 1936, the barracks were expanded with a larger new building for the SS troops and a large number of family apartments were added, which were completed and occupied in 1938. On April 23, 1945, the German Waffen-SS troops withdrew and American troops occupied the Muhlberg barracks and stayed until spring 1946.
